Base ships Earn & Borrow so apps can plug in yield and loans
Coinbase's L2 is not launching its own bank — it is packaging Morpho/Aave-style markets so wallets and fintechs can offer USDC yield and crypto-backed borrowing in-app.

Base is productising other people's lending markets — so your banking app can show yield and borrow buttons without reinventing Aave.
Base, the Ethereum layer-2 incubated by Coinbase, has published an Earn & Borrow integration stack: a way for wallets, exchanges and fintech apps to offer variable stablecoin yield and crypto-collateralised loans using third-party protocols rather than a Base-native bank.
What "stack" actually means
According to Base's brand materials and CryptoBriefing's summary, platforms keep choosing their own wallet UX, custody model and risk disclosures. Base supplies onchain settlement and wiring guides for:
- Earn — deposit supported stablecoins such as USDC into vaults or money markets (Morpho vault examples feature in the docs).
- Borrow — open over-collateralised loans (for example USDC against WETH) via markets on Morpho or Aave V3 on Base.
Base states it has commercial relationships with Morpho and Aave but does not curate, manage or guarantee any vault. Yields are variable; a figure cited around the launch put average stablecoin yields across tracked Base lending markets near 4.45% (excluding incentives, as of early October data on Base's page).
Why builders care
Embedding earn/borrow inside an existing app removes a hop to a DeFi front-end. That is useful for neobanks and wallets that already hold user balances — and for Coinbase's broader thesis that more financial activity should settle on Base. It does not remove liquidation risk, oracle risk or smart-contract risk; those stay with the underlying protocols and the integrating platform's UX.
What to watch next
Adoption will show up in vault TVL, borrow utilisation and which consumer apps actually ship the buttons — not in press copy. Readers new to the category can start with our What is DeFi? explainer and What is a stablecoin?.
