Crypto exchange OKX has rolled out OKX Shield in the United States, promising to cover customers for up to $100,000 if their accounts are compromised and up to $500,000 for VIP clients, The Block reported on Tuesday. The exchange says there is no subscription or activation fee. Former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who sits on the OKX board, pitched the programme on a press call as evidence that the company backs its own security.

What OKX Shield offers

  • Standard accounts: protection of up to $100,000 if an account is compromised.
  • VIP accounts: up to $500,000.
  • Cost: no subscription and no activation fee, according to the company.
  • Where: the US launch follows a European rollout last month with similar limits.

OKX did not spell out every condition in the material reported so far, so users should read the programme's terms before relying on it. Cover of this kind does not replace basic account hygiene; our guides on spotting crypto scams and storing crypto safely explain the habits that matter most.

Cuomo's pitch: trust

"Why should you trust OKX? Because OKX trusts OKX's system," Cuomo told reporters, describing the cover as the exchange putting "money right next to your money". He joined the OKX board in July, a month after OKX and NYSE owner Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) formed a 50-50 joint venture that he co-chairs.

The launch lands as scams stay in focus: on Monday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta said residents of the state lost $11.4 billion to crypto scams in 2025.

The tokenized stock row

On the same call, Cuomo addressed the 16 companies that objected to having tokenized versions of their shares traded on OKXICE, the planned venue from OKX and ICE, CoinDesk reported. He called the opt-outs from Microsoft, Alphabet, Goldman Sachs and others "a very natural response", saying the SEC's experimental framework was built to let companies choose and that many would want to wait and see. He described the venue as a sandbox with caps on how many stocks can take part and how much can trade. For background, see our explainer on what tokenized stocks are.
