Standard Chartered signs deal to buy Zodia Custody
Standard Chartered signed definitive agreements to take full control of crypto custodian Zodia's regulated units and fold them into its Securities Services arm.
CryptoGroup Newsroom · · 2 min read

Standard Chartered has signed definitive agreements to acquire the regulated operating businesses of Zodia Custody, bringing crypto custody inside the bank itself. The move turns a non-binding offer that Zodia's shareholders accepted in May into a firm deal, although regulatory approvals and closing conditions are still outstanding, Cointelegraph reported, citing the bank's Wednesday announcement.
What Standard Chartered is buying
- 100% of Zodia Custody UK Limited, the parent of Zodia's regulated companies in Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Luxembourg and the United Arab Emirates.
- The custody business would be integrated into the bank's existing Securities Services operations, where it already looks after traditional assets for institutions.
- Zodia's software and professional-services assets would be carved out into Zodia Solutions, an independent entity under the bank's SC Ventures arm, to sell digital-asset infrastructure to other financial institutions.
No price was given in the report.
Why it matters
Zodia was set up inside Standard Chartered's innovation unit, so this is less a takeover of a stranger than a decision to bring crypto custody onto the main balance sheet. For institutional clients the difference is practical: holding bitcoin or tokenised assets with a global bank's securities-services division sits more comfortably with risk committees than using a stand-alone start-up. Big banks are converging on the same idea — Deutsche Bank has laid out its own crypto custody plans for Germany and Asia.
