A privacy coin that trades freely on crypto exchanges still has to fit through Europe's settlement pipes before it can trade on a stock exchange.

Euronext suspended CoinShares' Zcash exchange-traded product on Wednesday, the day it was supposed to start trading on Euronext Paris under the ticker ZCSH. The exchange's notice gave no reason, but a Euronext spokesperson, Flavio Bornancin-Tomasella, told Cointelegraph the halt was "strictly limited to operational settlement requirements" and would last until standard settlement can be "fully supported" by the central securities depository (CSD). CoinShares had announced the listing earlier the same day and had not commented by the time of the report.

What happened

  • Product: CoinShares Zcash ETP (ZCSH), due to list on Euronext Paris on Oct. 28.
  • Status: suspended "until further notice", pending settlement support at the CSD.
  • Context: it would have been the fourth Zcash product in Europe, after ETPs from 21Shares, Virtune and Valor launched this year.

Our take

This reads as plumbing, not a verdict on Zcash. Exchange-traded notes like this one have to clear and settle through a depository before trades can be booked, and Euronext is explicit that nothing beyond those operational requirements is behind the halt. Competing Zcash products from three issuers are already trading in Europe, and in the U.S. Grayscale's Zcash ETF just had its best week since September.

Still, privacy coins do carry extra friction in regulated markets. Banks, custodians and depositories have to be comfortable with an asset whose transfers can be fully shielded, and the EU's new anti-money-laundering rulebook will restrict how crypto firms handle anonymity-enhancing coins from 2027. A delay at the settlement layer is a reminder that "listed" depends on more than the exchange saying yes.

For investors, the practical point is the wrapper: a European crypto ETP is usually a collateralised note, not a fund. Our guide to crypto ETFs vs ETPs vs ETNs explains the difference, and what is Zcash covers how its optional privacy works — and why its NU7 upgrade is scheduled for early November.
