VanEck has dropped its plan to launch an exchange-traded fund built around Lido staked ether (stETH). In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday, 14 October, VanEck Digital Assets said it “does not intend to proceed with the planned distribution” of the trust’s shares, Cointelegraph reports.
What we know
- VanEck first filed the fund’s S-1 registration statement on 16 October 2025, almost exactly a year ago.
- The trust would have held stETH, the liquid staking token issued by Lido, and expected to collect staking rewards through that holding.
- The filing gives no reason for the withdrawal and does not say whether VanEck plans a different product in its place. Cointelegraph said it had asked the company for comment.
Why it’s notable
A stETH fund would have been one of the first U.S. ETF wrappers around a liquid staking token rather than ether itself. That would have given brokerage investors exposure to staking yield plus the extra layers that come with it — Lido’s smart contracts, its validator set and the token’s market price against ETH.
Pulling the filing removes one of the more experimental crypto ETF proposals from the queue. It does not, by itself, say anything about other ether products already on the market.
Frequently asked questions
What is stETH?
stETH is a token Lido issues when users stake ether through its protocol. It represents the staked ETH plus accumulated rewards and can be traded or used in DeFi while the underlying ether stays staked.
Did VanEck explain the decision?
No. The SEC filing only says VanEck does not intend to proceed with distributing the trust's shares. It does not give a reason or mention a replacement.
When was the fund first proposed?
VanEck filed the S-1 registration statement for the Lido staked ether ETF on 16 October 2025.
