Small caps 41%, bitcoin 7%: CryptoQuant flags an unusual rotation
CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost says small- and mid-cap crypto has outpaced bitcoin and large caps since late August, a rare pattern that can reverse fast.

Quick verdictSmall and mid caps lead on momentum since late August, but over a short window and with a built-in warning about fast reversals.
Jump to the verdict ↓Smaller cryptocurrencies have been gaining ground faster than bitcoin for roughly two months, according to CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost. In an analysis shared on 18 October, he said small- and mid-cap assets have grown their market value faster than both bitcoin and the large caps that usually follow it, a pattern he called "fairly unusual", Crypto Briefing reports.
How the comparison works
Darkfost's metric compares each segment's monthly average market cap with its own annual average. When the monthly figure rises well above the yearly one, that group is running hotter than its usual level. It measures momentum against each segment's own history, not raw size, so a small segment can post a big reading without being large.
| Small & mid caps | Bitcoin | Large caps (ex-BTC) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ratio change since late Aug | +41% | +7% | +3.5% |
| Typical role in recoveries | Follows later | Leads first | Follows bitcoin |
| Sensitivity to sentiment | High | Lower | Medium |
Why it breaks the usual pattern
In past recoveries money has usually gone to bitcoin first, as the largest and most liquid asset, before spreading to smaller coins — a sequence that was especially clear after the 2023 bear market. This time the long tail moved earlier, while large caps lagged even bitcoin. We noted a similar move in our report on altcoins outpacing bitcoin, and contrasts with the heavier drawdowns in ether and big altcoins during recent sell-offs.
+ Pros
- Points to growing risk appetite beyond bitcoin
- Measured against each segment's own history, which filters some noise
− Cons
- Covers only about two months
- Small caps react sharply to shifts in sentiment and liquidity
- Says nothing about which individual tokens drive the move
Our verdict
Momentum yes, trend not yet proven
Darkfost's data shows smaller assets running hotter than bitcoin since late August, and he flagged the risk himself: small caps can unwind as fast as they rise. It is a reading of market mood, not a forecast. If you are weighing bitcoin against other coins, our bitcoin vs ethereum comparison explains how the biggest assets differ.
