Mt. Gox pushes creditor repayment deadline to October 2027

Creditors of Mt. Gox, the Tokyo bitcoin exchange that collapsed in 2014, will have to wait up to another year: the deadline for repayments has been moved from Oct. 31, 2026, to Oct. 31, 2027. Rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi announced the change in an Oct. 16 notice, saying a Japanese court had approved it, CryptoSlate reported.
What the extension covers
The new deadline applies to the three payment types in the rehabilitation plan:
- Base Repayment
- Early Lump-Sum Repayment
- Intermediate Repayment
According to the trustee, these payments are largely complete for creditors who met the requirements without complications, with the exception of certain payment types. Many claimants, however, have still not finished the required procedures, and others hit problems while their payments were being processed. Kobayashi said the extra year would let the trustee settle outstanding claims where reasonably practicable. He gave no timetable for individual payouts and no updated count of how many creditors are still waiting.
How far repayments have come
Payouts in bitcoin and bitcoin cash began in July 2024 through designated exchanges, including Kraken and Bitstamp. By March 2025, more than 19,500 creditors had received BTC and BCH, according to an earlier trustee update. Some creditors receive coins directly through those exchanges, while others are paid in cash from the sale of crypto. Each transfer depends on account checks, corrections to creditor data and security reviews, coordinated between the claimant, the trustee and the exchange, which is where delays build up.
What creditors are told to do
The trustee asked unpaid creditors to use the official rehabilitation claims system and its FAQ section, and to log in before contacting the trustee so their identity can be verified. Requests sent outside the system may be harder to process, and responses may be slow because of the volume of inquiries.
Why it still matters
Mt. Gox remains the textbook case for why many holders prefer to keep coins in their own wallets instead of leaving them on a trading platform. Our comparison of centralized and decentralized exchanges explains the custody trade-off. Large old-coin movements still draw attention: this morning we reported on a whale moving 411 BTC bought in 2013, the year Mt. Gox dominated bitcoin trading.
